The Process of Choosing

I miss my yellow flower mug.

It was not a mug I chose for myself, yet it became part of me.

With flowers and yellow rim, my mug was not part of any set; it stood alone.

The circular black scratches at the bottom were a joyful reminder of the simple pleasure I took in a hot cup of coffee at my parents’ house where making a café latte was a social event and required time and the company of a best friend.

Both intimate and social matters could be resolved while conversing over the perfect cup.

“So, why’d you let go of it?” Jean asks.

“When you’ve just demonstrated to your readers the value of keeping stuff”.

Yes and no.

The reason I enjoyed the memories ‘told’ by my mug, is because it gave me the opportunity to notice and pay attention to my relationship with it.

In fact, the process of de-cluttering is about making choices. It requires paying attention, being aware and taking charge.

We make choices every minute of every day. Even when we pile up our stuff and hide it in the closet. In delaying making a decision, we are making a choice to do so.

Eventually, we have a closet full of unconscious decisions, and we ask a professional organizer to take charge of our ‘stuff’.

The point is not about whether or not I kept the mug. It’s about taking charge of my stuff and going through the process of choosing. It is a call to action: show up and stay present.

This is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Less is More!

I must get dressed and go to work! There is only one pair of dressy pants. The question is which top will go with it.I should have bought a nice suit; I must go shopping this weekend. Well, I didn’t! So I have to do with what I have.

I have been having this monologue for 5 months now. I learned to work around two sets of dressy suits. I became aware of the quality, the color, and function of each shirt or blouse. In this process I developed a loving relationship with each item I have. I wash and dry each item effectively and timely. No more closets full of clothes that I never knew I had. No more emptying the entire closet to find out the suit has a stain that I have no time to clean before I head out.

No more shame!

Organizing my home is the skill I need most, but feeling shame about it prevents me from asking for help and getting the information I desperately need.

Dear Clair,

Wow! What a powerful and wise statement! Shame is what keeps us from love, from wellness. It is when we strip the layers of shame that we let love in. This is the moment when everything becomes simple and clear. So we look at our messy bedroom and put each item in its place without judgment. It is then that logic works best for us, and what brings joy and love to our life.

So! Today dear friend; look at your bedroom and make it your friendly place. Make it a place where you feel greeted with love and care as soon as you step in. You deserve it and it is waiting for your love and attention. Make it your primary relationship for now, in this moment. Treat your bedroom as if you treat a new born baby and it will reflect the tender love that you deserve.

Yours with love,

Hilla
